UFC 302 title fight could be Dustin Poirier's last octagon appearance

Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has had a long and storied mixed martial arts career.  He began his career as a pro in May 2009, and has now fought in the UFC’s octagon 30 times.  

“The Diamond” has fought the biggest names in the lightweight division and holds two wins over former two-division titleholder Conor McGregor.  He won Fight of the Night nine times in a row and was crowned interim champion of the 155-pound division.  

On June 1, in the UFC 302 main event, Poirier will have the opportunity to become the undisputed lightweight champion after two previously failed attempts when he takes on titleholder Islam Makhachev.  This fight could also be the final one of Poirier’s professional career.  

“I have given so much to this sport, not just physically, but also my time and my focus.  Fighting requires you to be totally focused on yourself.  I want to spend time with my family.  I want to be with my family. I’m going to concentrate on my daughter and what she is doing, my wife, the foundation I run, and my businesses back home.  For me, I’m putting a lot off so to speak to chase my dreams.  You must be selfish to become one of the top.  I’ve done it for so many years.  I am approaching 18 years in combat and I want to be the world…
