Dana White announces UFC 302 co-main event: Strickland and Costa.

UFC 302 in Newark (N.J.) on 1st June at the Prudential center didn’t announce its main event or comain event until last Saturday.

UFC CEO Dana White revealed during the UFC 300 Post-Fight Press Conference, that the UFC 302 Main Event will feature the lightweight title.  Champion Islam Makhachev faces Dustin Poirier.  In the co-main event, former middleweight champion Sean Strickland takes on former title challenger Paulo Costa.

White announced that the main event of Islam vs. Poirier will be held on June 1st in Newark, New Jersey.  White said: “Co-main, five round, Strickland against Costa.”

Makhachev (25-1) knocked out former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in his last fight.  Volkanovski was the subject of both his title defenses.  Poirier (30-8, 1 NC), won by knockout, ended Benoit Saint Denis’s five-fight winning streak.    

Strickland (28-6) lost the 185-pound championship to Dricus Du Plessis via split decision at UFC 297 in January.  He’s lobbied for an immediate rematch but after meeting with the fight promotion agreed to face Costa next.
